As ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox pedals her way toward one of the most ambitious goals in cycling history, New Brunswick cyclists were proud to play a small part in her remarkable journey.

Wilcox, the reigning women’s around-the-world record holder, is currently attempting to become the fastest person ever to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle, setting her sights on the overall record of 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes set by Mark Beaumont in 2017. To achieve it, she’ll need to average roughly 386 kilometres a day for nearly 79 consecutive days.

This past weekend, that journey brought her through New Brunswick!

What could have been just another stretch of road became something much more. Cyclists from across the province rolled out to meet her, offer encouragement, and accompany her for a few memorable kilometres.

A large group escorted Lael through Fredericton, creating an unforgettable welcome as she passed through our capital city. Others continued all the way to Salisbury, helping carry the energy eastward. Velo NB’s Vanessa Thompsen connected with her in Moncton, for a stretch of the ride, and countless others followed her progress from afar.

If you’ve been listening to Lael’s daily podcast updates, you may have heard a special shoutout to the New Brunswick cycling community. Despite the demanding pace required for a world-record attempt, she took the time to recognize the kindness and support she experienced here.

It’s a reminder of what makes cycling in New Brunswick so special. Whether it’s a provincial race, a club ride, a charity event, or a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with one of the sport’s great adventurers, our community shows up.

For many New Brunswick riders, the chance to spend even a few kilometres alongside Lael Wilcox will be a memory they’ll carry for years to come. For Lael, we hope the encouragement she found here provides a little extra lift in the days ahead.

Safe travels; we’re cheering for you as you chase history.
